As diverse as their backgrounds may have been, they had a few things in common: They were all big time, hard ass, no-nonsense kind of people. The extremists of the extreme. Each one touted an impressive biography and a list of credentials a mile long; some arguably 135 miles long. These people meant business. It was more than a little intimidating to line up with runners of this fine caliber. Everyone at Badwater is talented. Polished. Trained. Eager. My heart rate was a pounding 161 beats per minute as I stood on the starting line.

It just so happens that the sponsor of the Badwater Ultramarathon was none other than Kiehl’s. So it was a natural evolution for Chris Bergland, triathlete extraordinaire, to represent his company in the toughest footrace on the planet. In 2003, the owners of Kiehl’s, Jami Morse and Klaus Von Heiddeger were both incredible athletes. The store, a small family-owned apothecary, had been located on the same corner since 1851. Chris asked Jami and Klaus if they would send him to compete at Badwater.

My feet were cooking inside the shoes I had lined with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Until that day in the desert blisters had never been a real issue for me. Naturally I’ve had blisters in the past, but nothing like this. The blistering started around 60 miles when the course begins a long decent into the Panamint Valley. The heat and friction from running downhill caused the skin on my heels and toes to slowly rub off. The pain was nearly unbearable. At several points throughout the race we were forced to stop and repair my feet.
