Those who make reality opaque through the dominant ideology, through spreading, multiplying, reproducing the dominant ideology, are swimming with the current! Those who demystify the reproducing task are swimming against the current! Swimming against the current means risking and assuming risks.

Together, as a staff, we helped each other, taught each other, reeducated ourselves on-the-job, year after year. Teachers who want to transform their practice can greatly benefit from group support like that. A staff development seminar is a first need of teachers, a place for peers to engage in mutual re-formation. While I was trying to re-form myself as a teacher, at least there was little student hostility to me. I often wondered why the students were so tolerant, even though I was stumbling along and laying out a menu of grammar and rhetoric, most of which they heard before.

I studied philosophy of language on my own, preparing myself at 18 or 19 to understand structuralism and linguistics. Then, I began teaching Portuguese grammar with the love of language and philosophy, and with the intuition that I must understand the expectations of the students, and should engage them in dialogue.
